Seriously, though: what's with the penguins?

you are the only one

A very good thing is old-timey (and sometimes even modern British) cookbooks referring to “goat’s cheese.” It most certainly is not the goat’s cheese. It is cheese of the goat, sure. But the goat didn’t make the cheese, didn’t even know CHEESE WAS A THING at the time of their being milked. (Yelled through a megaphone: IN THE TIME OF THE GOAT’S MILKING)

The goat is not a creator. Ah! you say But there is no cheese without milk! That is immaterial. Think it through, friend. It is not the goat’s cheese.

I know the term is meant in the sense of “from the” and not such a literal possessive, but it still sounds amusing to me. Also, people used to eat from a wider variety of animals, which is why it was always “hen’s eggs” (which got dropped, we assume chicken)* and presumably “goat’s cheese” (but goat cheese is still a thing even now because goat is not the default, given the ubiquity of cows).

*Pick up that megaphone again: WE ASSUME CHICKEN

Which would you rather have on a t-shirt? Stark, straight text, Jenny Holzer style.

GOAT IS NOT THE DEFAULT

(or)

THE UBIQUITY OF COWS

It is strange sometimes, to be poking away at the magic box. I can alternately bemoan the fact that I spend my entire workday and a good chunk of my leisure time on computers but it is kind of magic what can be done. Excel is magic, word processors are magic, Wikipedia (Random Article is my stichomancy) is magic.

This album (the newest one) is the vibe of this entire month and more or less how it sounds inside my head. I want to listen to nothing else.

And speaking of listening, when I want to listen to “nothing but not nothing” while working, it turns out that for me that is not classical or ambient but darkwave/synthwave. Drum machines, chilly distant vocoder, and a lot of sidechain compression is my smooth jazz.

(I have a friend who worked from home much earlier than many of us, like early 2000s, and she confessed early on to listening to the smooth jazz channel while working. She was continually roasted about this and someone put on smoooth jazz at her baby shower for further needling. Now I just think she was a visionary and way ahead of the whole lo-fi-for-concentration* trend.

*universally shit music, just robot-generated shit
